I see no one commented here; honestly, I am not sure. It was never really mentioned in the books; then again, golden queens rarely left the eggs when they were incubating, if I remember correctly. I think it was only a very rare few queens and their riders who took flight during this time (Lessa and I believe the legendary Mora - if I have her name right)... If you want my guess: if someone actually was able to get in there and do harm to an egg (steal it included) and live to get past the queen, the other dragons and the hold inhabitants that lived with and served the riders - probably execution (first guess), if not exile and/or holdlessness (second guess).

Didn't even see you had posted here until now. O.o See, I'm kind of sort of trying to write a fanfiction about a young girl who is made holdless with her father but becomes a rider. I couldn't think of a suitable crime for the father, so I began to think he stole an egg because he was always passed over when the selection came around. Because the dragon inside was NOT his dragon, the baby died looking for its chosen mate. The only porblem with this is what you said; the sheer impossibility of stealing an egg and deciding what punishment is worthy of that crime.

Well, yeah - the queen is usually always tending her eggs; though, she can leave them, but I am guessing for short amounts of time, until they have hard enough shells and are ready to hatch. Uhm, a dragon would not impress - as far as I'm guessing, again - until a few days before hatching; depending on when your story took place, before or afer Lessa became Wyerwoman. Before hand, no possible match was allowed to touch the eggs, but she did and impressed - so then all the possible matches were given time to wander around the eggs, touching them, etc. The dragon knows, as the books say - it's not really discussed how the dragons know who is right for them (or who would be a better match.) And Path, a green, didn't choose anyone who was picked by the older dragons - she climbed the stairs up to a young woman in the audience! Now, it's been years since I read the books, but this is what I remember. I would think it would be near impossible to steal a dragon egg - for their size, as well as for the fact of the dragons around the nesting area.

Oh, well I guess I can't write a fanfiction then. I can keep it in my mind, though! Even really bad fanfictions I think of I enjoy to "read"in my mind. Thank you so, so much for the in depth information!
